A child with a dental emergency and bleeding lip

No parent wants to see their child in any pain or discomfort, and knowing what to do in a dental emergency can help your child save their permanent tooth. Dental emergencies can happen for a variety of reasons, from a piece of food being too hard to a sports accident. Teeth can become cracked, damaged, broken, or even knocked out. If this happens, it’s important to see a dentist because if problems with teeth are left untreated it can lead to serious and painful dental issues.

How to Handle a Children’s Dental Emergency

If your child has experienced any sort of health emergency, a children’ dental emergency is similar. Here are some of the first things you should do if your child has a dental emergency.

  • Check for any bleeding or signs of a cut
  • Stop any bleeding & apply pressure
  • Clean any open wounds
  • Take the child to a pediatric dentist or doctor as soon as possible

What to do if your Child’s Permanent Tooth is Knocked Out

If your child is active and does a lot of running around then that means they may fall and get hurt. Mouth injuries can be a common problem if they fall if they can’t brace themselves. If your child’s adult or permanent tooth gets knocked out then the first thing you should do is to locate the tooth, if you can. It’s important not to touch the root of the tooth.

Next, the tooth should be (if it’s possible) be placed back into your child’s mouth to maintain the moisture on the tooth and increase the chances that the pediatric dentist can place the tooth back successfully. Your child should then bite down on damp gauze or a wet tag back gently to help keep the tooth in place.

If your child can’t put the tooth back in their mouth then put the tooth in a cup of milk to keep the root alive and moist. Even if the tooth is broken you should do this and bring it to your children’s dentist appointment so that the dentist can asses if the tooth can be saved.
