As a parent, you are always concerned with your child and want to make sure that they are as healthy as they can be. There are a few things you can do in between when you bring your child in their appointment to see a pediatric dentist to make sure that their teeth are staying healthy.

Toothpaste & Fluoride for Children’s Dentistry

Toothpaste and fluoride have a lot in common, they’re both fighting against bacteria to keep your child’s teeth clean. The bacteria that fluoride work against is what causes tooth decay and cavities.

Toothpaste Tips for Pediatric Dental Care

Before your baby has any baby teeth, you should start “brushing” their gums with a warm wet washcloth so they get used to the motion. Once their first tooth erupts, you can start introducing a fluoride toothpaste. Use a grain of rice amount of toothpaste for their first tooth. You can get an age-appropriate toothbrush that they will be interested in.

Many parents ask us what toothpaste to use for their children and what toothpaste is best for overall pediatric teeth cleaning. We recommend any toothpaste that has fluoride in it and has the seal from the American Dental Association (ADA).

What Role Does Fluoride Toothpaste Play in Children’s Dentistry?

  1. Fluoride stops the harmful bacteria on your child’s teeth from breaking down the tooth enamel.
  2. Fluoride helps rebuild lost enamel on your child’s teeth.
  3. Fluoride helps strengthen baby’s teeth before the teeth even come out of the gums.
  4. Most community drinking water has fluoride in the water because of the oral health benefits.
  5. Dentists recommend at your child’s dentist visit to get a topical fluoride treatment to help your child’s teeth stay strong.

Oral health is important for your children and if you start them off early with good dental habits, it will last them years to come. Make sure your child is using a toothpaste with fluoride in it and schedule a pediatric dentistry appointment every six months. Do you want the best pediatric dentist in Chicago?
