For young parents, there seems to be an endless stream of information to learn about your child. That is especially true when it comes to healthcare. And for oral health, it is common for new parents to have hundreds of questions on taking care of their little one’s new teeth. And in some cases, there is a lot of information you may not have even considered yet about your child’s teeth. Here are a few oral facts about kids teeth, that are helpful for every parent to know.

Tooth Decay Is The Most Common Childhood Disease

Among children, there are many diseases to watch for warning signs of. Allergies, diabetes, asthma, and obesity are a few that many parents are constantly on the lookout for. But not many parents think about cavities and tooth decay. However, tooth decay is actually the most common health problem that your child is likely to face. It is over 20 times more likely than diabetes and five times more likely than asthma. There are many signs of tooth decay including toothaches. But the best way to ensure that your child’s teeth are healthy is to begin taking them to the dentist once the first tooth has breached the gumline.

Dental Problems Can Become School Problems

Take your son or daughter out of class for dental work can hurt their education. And although you should really only need to visit the dentist twice a year (with most families setting up appointments during summer and winter breaks), many families have to visit the dentist on repeated visits for extensive dental work. Poor dental health leads to extra visits for fillings and other dental work, which means taking kids out of school more often. For families that schedule dental cleanings for the last week in the summer, this often means kids have to be taken out of school and miss important early days of the school year to have dental work done.

Many Children Have Untreated Cavities

A report showed that almost 1 in every 5 children between 2 and 19 years old has untreated cavities. When cavities go untreated they can become severe problems later in life including tooth loss. That is why it is vital that your child visits a dentist twice a year to ensure that their teeth are properly being taken care of.
