Ensuring that your child has a full set of functioning teeth well into adulthood starts with the preventative actions you take when they are still young. Over the past few decades, the use and application of dental sealants for children has been on the rise in an effort to prevent childhood tooth decay. Dental sealants are a protective dental cement barrier that is applied to the surface of your child’s molars in order to prevent cavities. At All Star Dental, we will sit down with you and your child to discuss whether or not dental sealants would be beneficial in protecting your child’s teeth.

Determining If Dental Sealants Are The Best Option

After scheduling an appointment at one of our five All Star Dental locations, we will take x-rays of your child’s mouth as well as inspect the teeth for signs of deep grooves in the molars. If we find that routine brushing and flossing is not enough to prevent cavities, then we will suggest that your child have dental sealants put in place. The entire process only takes one appointment and the sealant lasts for as long as 10 years. Keep in mind that your child will still need to routinely brush, floss, and visit our Chicago area dental office for bi-annual checkups.

Why Choose Dental Sealants for Your Child

There are a number of benefits to choosing dental sealants while your child is still young. First and foremost, the biggest benefit is to prevent future cavities. If your child is prone to dental carries, then sealants will work to reduce these cases in the future by filling in any deep divets in the molars where plaque and tartar like to build up. Dental sealants can also prevent food particles from building up on the surface of your child’s teeth. Oftentimes children don’t have the best oral hygiene habits or brushing technique so these food particles may end up remaining on your child’s teeth. Another consideration for dental sealants for your child is that the procedure is quick and lasts for a long period of time, making it worth the investment. Most dental insurance plans will also cover this type of preventative work.

The best way to fight cavities is to take preventative measures before they become a problem. With childhood tooth decay on the rise, we highly recommend opting for dental sealants so that your children have a strong and healthy smile.
