If you have sensitive teeth, you are not alone! Teeth sensitivity is a common problem most patients will have it at least once in their life. Most pain that is felt is often times sudden and temporary, but it’s a sharp pain. The pain can comes stem down into the teeth’s roots. It most often happens with things that are too hot or too cold or very acidic. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help with the pain and minimalize your teeth’s sensitivity.
Finding out what is causing your teeth sensitivity is the most important part – once you find out what’s causing the sensitivity, you can start to treat it. Because there is no “group” for teeth sensitivity – it can happen to anyone.
Ways to prevent teeth sensitivity
- Don’t brush too hard, this will wear down your teeth’s enamel which is the protective layer on your tooth. If you feel like you’re brushing with a heavy hand, you can get a soft bristled brush to help.
- Avoid foods and drinks with high acidity. If you are eating or drinks something that is very acidic then it’s best to wait about an hour before brushing to strengthen.
- Be careful when “bleaching” your teeth. Everyone wants to have their whitest teeth but some of the products used to make your teeth whiter can wear down the enamel and cause teeth sensitivity.
Ways to relieve pain from tooth sensitivity
- Try a desensitizing toothpaste, these have ingredients to help shield the teeth and nerves from food or drinks that may irritate them.
- Use a fluoride mouthwash. Adding fluoride to your teeth will help strengthen not only the teeth but the teeth’s enamel to give more protection as you eat and drink.
- If you grind your teeth at night, use a mouth guard. Grinding teeth break down anything that will protect your teeth.
- Getting a regular dental check-up. Your dentist can identify problems in your mouth before you have any symptoms. This way, you’ll know you’re enamel is worn down and may be prone to teeth sensitivity so you can start to prevent it before you have any pain.
