Whether you have recently moved to a new town, switching insurance providers, or are a young adult and have to find your very own dentist, finding the right one can be challenging. In fact, many young adults put off their first dental appointment because they are afraid of choosing the wrong dentist. If you have had bad experiences in the past or are worried about choosing a bad dentist, here are some tips on how to find the right dentist in your area.
Before you turn to Google or a rental listing site, check with your friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Other adults in your area can recommend a great dentist, and if you get your dental insurance through your office, it is always a good idea to ask your coworkers. Since you have the same insurance you are likely to find a dentist that is both great and in-network.
Not everyone has dental insurance, and not every dentist accepts your insurance. If you are using Google to find a dentist make sure to find out what insurance policies they take. Alternatively, if you do not have insurance, look for dentists that provide financing options. Dentists that finance can make it much easier for individuals without insurance to pay for larger procedures including restorative dentistry.
If you are about to move, you may consider asking your dentist if they know any dentists in the area you are moving towards. Depending on where you are moving your current dentist may actually know of other dentists in the area. Alternatively, you can use the ADA’s list of local and state dental societies to find dentists in your future hometown.
If you have kids you want to find either a family dentist or a pediatric dentist. Not only are family dentists usually designed to decrease the fears or anxieties kids might feel, but they specialize in treating patients of all ages. Aside from having fun activities for kids, the staff is experienced working with children. In fact, most dentists that are not family dentists will not accept young patients. A child has different dental needs than an adult including tracking the growth and development of adult teeth.
