How Can I Prevent Cavities?

No matter what age you are, you probably don’t look forward to getting a dental filling. In fact, a lot of kids are afraid of going to the dentist, because they are afraid that they might have cavities. But there are many things you can do to prevent cavities, and one of the best things you can do is go to regular checkups. Aside from getting dental screenings, you get professional teeth cleaning as well as specialized dental procedures like dental sealants that can prevent cavities. Here are a few ways you can decrease the chances of getting a cavity by changing your daily habits.

Different People Have Different Cavity Risk Levels

Different individuals have different risks of getting cavities. This is why two children in the same household can often have different experiences at the dentist even if they both brush and floss the same amount. It is important to understand if you are at a greater risk for tooth decay. The best way to know your risk level is by going to a dental exam.

Use The Right Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Beyond simply brushing and flossing every day it is also important that individuals use the right toothbrush and toothpaste. Many people do not switch their toothbrushes as often as they should. Over time the bristles of a toothbrush start to wear down. Replacing your toothbrush regularly can prevent this from happening. Additionally, it is important to choose a toothpaste that fights against cavities. Some dentists even recommend that you utilize fluoride toothpaste to help fight cavities.

Avoid Sugary Drinks and Acidic Foods

Another way to take care of your teeth is to avoid foods and beverages that can damage your enamel. Foods and beverages high in sugar or very acidic can damage the surface of your teeth. Enamel doesn’t regenerate, so it is important to take precautions. Every parent knows that sugary sodas should be enjoyed in moderation, but even lemonade and orange juice contain high levels of sugar and strong acid content. It is important to avoid drinking or eating too many sugary things, and to always brush after having them.

Quit Smoking And Avoid Tobacco

Hopefully you don’t smoke. But if you do, quitting has many health benefits. Aside from lowering risk of heart and lung conditions, quitting tobacco use can also greatly improve your oral health. Smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco cause a variety of issues with oral health including oral cancer. Quitting can help prevent these issues and help keep your teeth and gums safe.
