A cavity is a type of permanent damage to a tooth caused by bacteria in your mouth eroding and destroying the tooth. A cavity forms when bacteria that feeds off of the food and drinks we consume lives in the mouth and destroys layer after layer of a tooth. The outermost layer, the enamel, is the first to get damaged, followed by the dentin. Left unchecked, a cavity can spread deeper into the tooth all the way to the root. In this article we will discuss how to tell if you have a cavity. But the best way to know for sure is to see a dentist. If you need a dentist in the Chicago area, give us a call.

How Can I tell If I Have A Cavity?

There are many symptoms that you might have a cavity. That being said, symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. It is quite possible that you could have a cavity and not even know it. That is why dentists recommend that you see them twice a year. This means that any signs of decay can be tracked, and a cavity never has a long time to grow without being treated. Going years without treating a cavity can easily lead to the decay spreading from tooth to tooth or deep into the tooth’s roots. That said, here are a few signs you might have a cavity:

  • Brown/Black Spots: If you notice staining on the surface of your tooth like a brown or black spot that is not going away. That could be a sign of a cavity.
  • Pits/Holes: If you see a visible pit or hole in your teeth, this is a sign that you either have a cavity or your tooth has gotten damaged.
  • Sensitivity: If your teeth are sensitive, especially to cold and hot food items, this could be a sign that the enamel has been stripped from your tooth by dental decay. This is the first step towards getting a cavity.
  • Toothaches: Toothaches have many different causes but can be caused by a cavity.

If you are noticing any of the above issues or are worried you have a cavity, one of the best things to do is to quickly call a dentist and get the tooth checked out. Waiting for your next routine appointment is not recommended if you have a toothache. The earlier a cavity is caught the better.

How Can I Prevent Cavities?

There are many ways to prevent cavities. The most important thing to do is see your dentist twice every year. A quick dental visit can let you know if you have a cavity, or if a cavity is beginning to form. In some cases, the early signs of dental decay can be reversed. Additionally, dentists provide professional cleanings, and a variety of services like fluoride treatments that can increase the strength of your teeth.

Beyond seeing the dentist, you should also brush and floss every single day to prevent the formation of cavities. Brushing and flossing can prevent food from creating more bacteria in your mouth that can lead to both cavities and gum disease. Finally, avoiding sugary foods and beverages can help prevent tooth decay.
